Sarsaparilla is a woody climbing vine native to tropical Americas and was introduced to Europe in the 16th century. It became famous as a popular tonic ingredient in the 19th century and was widely used in traditional blood-purifying preparations and spring tonics by Western herbalists. It is also the original flavouring for traditional sarsaparilla soft drinks and has a mild earthy slightly sweet flavour.
