Pot Marigold or Calendula is one of the most useful and versatile herbs in Western herbalism and has been used in European medicine since the 12th century. The bright golden petals were used both internally as a tea and externally in oils creams and salves. They were traditionally associated with skin healing and were a staple herb in cottage garden medicine across Britain and Europe. The flowers have a slightly bitter resinous taste.
