Ground ivy is a common garden and hedgerow plant with a strong aromatic scent that has been used in European folk medicine since the Middle Ages. Before the widespread use of hops it was one of the main herbs used to flavour and preserve ale a tradition that gave rise to its old name alehoof. Traditional herbalists used it as a pectoral herb and it was prepared as a tea or used in herbal blends.
