White willow bark has been used in herbal medicine for over 4000 years with records of its use in ancient Egyptian Chinese and Greek medicine. The Greek physician Hippocrates wrote about its properties. Significantly it was from willow bark that salicin was first isolated in the 19th century leading to the development of aspirin. Traditional herbalists prepared it as a decoction and it has a bitter astringent taste.
