The leaves are extraordinarily sweet containing steviol glycosides that can be up to 300 times sweeter than sugar. They were used in Paraguay to sweeten yerba mate long before the plant became known to the rest of the world. The dried leaf makes a pleasant naturally sweet addition to herbal tea blends.
