St John’s Wort is one of the most well-known herbs in western herbalism with a history of use stretching back to ancient Greece. Named because it traditionally blooms around the feast of St John on 24th June it was used in European folk medicine as an herb for the nervous system and as an oil infused preparation for topical application to bruises and muscle pain. The flowers contain hypericin giving them a characteristic red colour when crushed.
