Sage has been used in European herbal medicine since ancient Greece where its name comes from the Latin salvere meaning to be saved or to be well. It was a prized herb in medieval monastery gardens and was the subject of the famous saying Cur moriatur homo cui Salvia crescit in horto — why should a man die whilst sage grows in his garden.
