Marshmallow root has been used as a soothing demulcent herb since ancient Greece and was one of the most commonly prescribed herbs in traditional European medicine. The root is rich in mucilage which creates a slippery soothing quality when prepared as a cold infusion. Interestingly the original marshmallow confectionery was made from the whipped root. The cold infusion method is traditionally preferred to preserve the mucilaginous properties.
