Eyebright is a small wildflower that has been used in European herbal medicine since the Middle Ages. As the name suggests it was traditionally associated with eye complaints and was used in infusions and washes by folk herbalists. It has a mild slightly bitter taste and was a common ingredient in traditional British and German herbal preparations for the eyes and upper respiratory tract.
