Coltsfoot is one of the earliest flowering plants of spring and has a long history of use in European and Chinese herbal traditions. The leaves were traditionally dried and prepared as an infusion. It has been used by herbalists for centuries particularly as a herb for the respiratory system. The flowers appear before the leaves giving rise to the old name filius ante patrem meaning the son before the father.
